Chevening is the UK government’s international awards program aimed at developing global leaders.
Funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organizations, Chevening offers two types of award – Chevening Scholarships and Chevening Fellowships – the recipients of which are personally selected by British embassies and high commissions throughout the world.
Chevening offers a unique opportunity for future leaders, influencers, and decision-makers from all over the world to develop professionally and academically, network extensively, experience UK culture, and build lasting positive relationships with the UK.
Chevening Awards are an important element in Britain’s public diplomacy effort and bring professionals, who have already displayed outstanding leadership talents, to study in the UK. Chevening supports British foreign policy priorities and achieves FCDO objectives by creating lasting positive relationships with future leaders, influencers, and decision-makers.

It works with international organisations to promote British interests and global security, including the EU, NATO, the United Nations, the UN Security Council, and the Commonwealth.

The process of selecting Chevening Scholars takes a minimum of eight months from the application deadline to when applicants are conditionally selected for an award. Here is an overview of the application and selection process, so you always know what’s going on.
- 3 SEPTEMBER 2020 – Application open at 12:00 GMT
- 3 NOVEMBER 2020 – Applications close at 12:00 GMT
- 4 NOVEMBER 2020 – APPLICATIONS ARE SIFTED AGAINST ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA.
- MID-NOVEMBER TO DECEMBER 2020 -Reading committee assessments
- EARLY TO MID-FEBRUARY 2021 – APPLICANTS SHORTLISTED FOR INTERVIEWS
- 22 FEBRUARY 2021 – REFERENCES AND EDUCATION DOCUMENTS DEADLINE. The deadline to submit two references and education documents is 12:00 GMT (midday).
- 1 MARCH TO 30 APRIL 2021 – Interviews take place
- FROM EARLY JUNE 2021 – RESULTS
- 15 JULY 2021 – The deadline to receive and submit at least one unconditional UK university offer is 17:00 BST on 15 July 2021.
- SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2021 – STUDIES BEGIN IN THE UK
