Description

Study (YES) Program scholarships and Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange, sponsored by the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, give secondary school students in many countries an opportunity to study at American high schools and live with American host families for one academic year. The YES program is managed in partnership with the U.S. Department of State by an association of non-profit organizations.

 

Through this program, the students are enrolled in a full academic year of high school study in the U.S., labs and extracurricular activities along with attending classes with their American classmates. YES students also take part in special enrichment activities, with youth leadership, public service, training, a civic education program and other activities that develop an experienced understanding of American culture through communication with diverse American groups. Similarly, student participating act as cultural representatives to their American host communities, becoming precious resources for Americans, whose interaction with YES students gives them the opportunity to learn about the vibrant and rich culture of home countries of the students.

 

In Pakistan, Society for International Education (SIE) manages the YES program in association with the local U.S. Embassy, Public Affairs Office. Since 2003, the YES program has granted 1,274 scholarships to Pakistani high school students countrywide

Eligibilities

  • Pakistani citizen who lives in Pakistan.
  • Secondary school students in their native country (Pakistan) who are presently (Academic year 2020-21) registered in 9th or 10th grade or ‘O’ Levels students. (Note for O’ Level Students: Only O’ Level 9th grade or O’ Level 10th grade students are qualified to apply, while O’ Level 11th graders are not qualified.)
  • At least 15 years of age and not older than 17 years on August 1, 2021. (born in mid of August 1, 2004 to August 1, 2006)
  • Not less than 60% marks in all major/core subjects (English, Mathematics, Sciences) in past three years; overall minimum average 60% marks for the previous three years. (Students with a repeated year or a year break are not qualified.)
  • Can interact in English. Not less than 60% marks in English exam during the past three years (2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20).
  • Has not traveled to the United States

 

Note: Not less than 60% marks in every subject in the examination that would be held before leaving for the U.S.A. (The final exams that would be held in 2021). It would be mandatory for students to send their mark sheets of the previous examination after receiving the mark sheets.

 

Students who meet the following condition along with the criteria mentioned above would possibly be nominated for the final selection round:

 

  • Passing online interview.
  • Know about Pakistani norms and culture, and able to represent the same in the U.S. schools and societies.
  • Demonstrate flexibility, compliance, maturity, academic skill and good character.
  • Readiness to participate in daily life of host family.
  • All essential immunizations records, as charted in the Final Student Application, before coming to United States
  • Must demonstrate pledge and flexibility to promote cross-cultural understanding
  • Contract to attend classes as a full-time scholar and maintain at least an average of B Grade in American high school.
  • Contract and Readiness to obey the ‘YES Student Rules’ as mentioned in the Final Application of YES and all other instructions and guidelines during the program.
  • Meet eligibility requirements of U.S. J-1 visa.

STEP-1: Online Initial Application

 

  • Students fulfilling the Selection Criteria and agreeing to the Parent Student Agreement with General Program Rules must apply for the scholarship. Candidates must check Parent/Student agreement . They can fill out online Preliminary Application and upload all the document required. Students with physical disabilities, Female students, and students from non-elite or government schools are strongly encouraged to apply, if they meet the criteria.
  • The schools/organizations contributing are requested to assist students meeting the eligibility conditions to fill out the online Initial Applications.

 

STEP-2: Online Interview

 

After preliminary screening of online Initial Application, nominated candidates would be informed for the 2021-22 online interviews of YES. Nominated candidates for online interviews would be informed through the e-mail which they mentioned while filling out online Preliminary Application.

 

STEP-3: In-person Interview, English language quiz and Group Activity

 

  • Students who cleared the online interview would be sent in-person interview letter alongside YES 2021-22 Final Application on their addresses mentioned on their online Initial Applications respectively
  • It would be mandatory for students to fill out YES Final Application (attached with the letter) and appear in in-person interview on the location and date mentioned in the interview letter sent. (Students have to appear on the interview day by all means with completed YES Final Application along with the compulsory documents.)
  • Students would be taking English language test the same day.

 

STEP-4: Final Assessment

 

On the basis of online interview, English language quiz, in-person interview and gracefully filled or completed YES Final Application document required, final selection of the students will be made
The qualifiers would be informed by a Scholarship Acceptance form and a letter from the program office of YES.
