Description
The Faculty of Law of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK LAW) is an international law school with lecturers from over twenty diverse jurisdictions. Our LLM students are equally universal. We have an LLM alumni body from 40 countries/regions since the first intake in 2006. Our LLM Programmes are conducted in the CUHK Graduate Law Centre situated in Central, Hong Kong’s downtown business district. For the 2021-22, CUHK LAW offers four LLM Programmes:
- LLM in Chinese Business Law
- LLM in Common Law
- LLM in Energy and Environmental Law
- LLM in International Economic Law
Eligibilities
Applicants must have:
- a requirement to practice law in the dominion of the student’s residence
- a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree or a degree of equal standing (for the LLM in Common Law, the LLB should generally be from a non-Common Law jurisdiction
- a Bachelor’s degree in a non-law subject with considerable law-related working practice.
As many areas of qualified activity are correlated to law, the school welcomes applications from those who do not have a law degree but have work understanding in the areas of business, accountancy, social work, public administration, or any other alike fields with related legal experience. For the LLM in Energy and Environmental Law, candidates without a law degree must have work experience in the field of ecological protection, public administration, energy or any other relevant field.
Applications can be made before conclusion of an undergraduate degree, provided that the candidate is in the final year of study. In such situation, any offer would be conditional upon successful completion of the undergraduate degree, and gratification of the other admission requirements, prior to enrolment in the LLM Programmes.
Applicants whose undergraduate studies were not evaluated or conducted in English are required to take a suitable English language proficiency test and to achieve a satisfactory score, such as a score of 570 or above in TOEFL (Paper Based Test), 88 Band 6.5 or better in IELTS or above in TOEFL (Internet Based Test); which outcome was obtained not more than two years prior to the date of applying to join the LLM Programmes, or equivalent.
Benefits
In 2020-21, CUHK LAW will award three Global Scholarships to international students, and each one of those would be worth up to a maximum of HK$221,120 (approx. US$28,300) covering the tuition fee of HK$141,120 (approx. US$18,100) alongside living stipend of HK$80,000 (approx. US$10,200).

LLM Students can choose to study overseas as part of our International Exchange Programmes. These students are given the opportunity to travel to new destinations, to experience new cultures, to learn new subjects, to meet new people and gain a bigger worldwide exposure to influence forthcoming employers. Credits earned overseas may be transferred back to count towards degree requirements. Along with university-level exchanges, which cover more than two hundred places globally, there are also faculty-level exchanges whereby graduate students can go to Faculty of Law, , The University of Melbourne (Australia), Faculty of Law, Melbourne Law School Maastricht University (The Netherlands), The School of Law of Bocconi University (Italy), or The University of Auckland (New Zealand).
