The South Asia Journalism Fellowship (SAJP) by Chevening is hosted by the University of Westminster, and is intended towards South Asian based mid-career journalists. It is financially sponsored by the UK Commonwealth, Development and Foreign Office.

In order to be qualified for the Fellowship, applicant must:

 

  • Be a resident of Pakistan, India, Maldives, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka
  • Return to his/her home country after the fellowship period ends
  • Have a postgraduate degree (or equivalent experience or professional training in a work experience of at least seven years before applying
  • Be a mid-career journalist in the field of politics or economics in any of the eligible countries with good working knowledge of English (which might be evaluated by a competent English language evaluator)
  • Not have British or dual-British nationality
  • Agree to follow all relevant fellowship guidelines and prospects

  • Examining of applications as per the eligibility criteria, and autonomous reading commissions evaluate applications (2-3 weeks).
  • Applications would be nominated by the British embassies/high commissions in country (2-3 weeks).
  • Candidates are informed that they have been nominated for interview, and they have to submit reference letters before their interview. The notification times of interview may differ, but where possible candidates will be given 2-3 weeks’ notice for interviews.
  • Period of Interview and result announcement.
  • Receive provisional award letter from Chevening Secretariat (issued within two weeks of conditional section).
      • Complete and return all provisional award letter forms by the deadline (two weeks from receipt of the provisional award letter):
      • Acknowledgment of Chevening Fellowships terms and conditions and acceptance form
      • Letter of Client Care
      • Medical form
      • Photo page copy of the passport

Structure of the program

 

The fellows would be undertaking 8-week fellowship, which is also named as Good Governance in a Changing World: The Media, Politics and Society.  The program explores certain paths in which the media plays a significant role in holding democratic procedures with the civil service, government, and security along with the wider political system in both the UK and South Asian region.

 

Fellows would also explore different approaches taken by South Asia region and the UK, and then use that knowledge to direct discussions about tackling the issues, which challenge the field. Fellows would be challenged to discuss framework on the basis of evidence for key policy discussions, understand global positions (including appreciation of UK methods), supply practical experience, alongside encouraging dialogue on important matters.

 

The prospectus concentrates on the ways in which the media are held accountable, and the wider framework within which political organizations function. The reporting ethics are at the heart of all discussions.

 

Fellows would also participate in eight severe weeks of visits, lectures and debates that introduce them to key UK media, academics and political figures in the field. They would also spend time meeting their peers in some of the UK’s top media organizations, as well as running a convention on a topic of their choice in the concluding week.

 

This fellowship program would begin in March 2021.
