The Gates Cambridge Scholarship program is one the most prestigious scholarship programs. The program was established in 2000 by the Bill and Malinda Foundation via a donation of US $210m to the University of Cambridge.
The Gates scholarship is a fully funded scholarship offered to outstanding students outside the UK. The program offers full time post graduate degree in the available fields at the University of Cambridge. The Gates Cambridge scholarship is competitive and candidate must show excellent academic excellence. Through the transcripts, references, experience and their hunger for growth the University of Cambridge selects candidates who would be studying at the university.
Reasons for choice of course
Students need to make a valid and a strong chase as to why they chose to pursue a particular post-graduate degree. PhD and MPhil student need to contact a supervisor at the university with who they would work. Students will require a summary of the research project, which will be a part the application. Students also need to show that they have the required academic background and the needed skills and expertise to complete the course. They also need to make a strong case for how a certain course will help them for their future career.
A commitment to improving the lives of others
One of the many characteristics of the Gates Cambridge program is the commitment of students to improving the lives of others. The students will be studied deeply so that they know how a candidate will help the global society in the future.
A capacity for leadership

Benefits
The scholarship covers the full cost of students studying at the university. The following are included:
- Tuition fee
- Living allowance
- Single airfare ticket is provided at the beginning and at the end of the course
- Visa costs
- Immigration Health Surcharge
Other benefits
The Gates program also provides additional benefits:
- Academic development funding is also provided (£500 to up to £2,000 depending on the length of the course) to attend conferences and courses.
- Family allowance is also given to candidates with kids (£10,120 for a first child and £4,320 for a second child). Although no funding is provided for a partner.
- Fieldwork – candidates may apply to keep up to your normal maintenance allowance while on fieldwork as part of your PhD (the program does not fund other fieldwork costs)
- The program also provides Maternity/Paternity funding
- Hardship funding (for unforeseen difficulties)

Candidates need to submit their application for admission and funding (Gates Cambridge) via the University’s Graduate Application Portal.
To be considered for the scholarship, students must apply for admission to a course and a College place and the Gates Cambridge part of the funding section.
The admission section
In this section students need to apply to a specific graduate course and a College place. Applicants are required to provide all the usual details about themselves, academic background and plans for the selected course.
The funding section
In this section students can apply for a range of funding or scholarships offered including the Gates Cambridge Scholarships. It has its own sub-section. When applying for the Gates Scholarship students need to provide the following will be asked to provide the following:
- Statement
- Research proposal (PhD applicants only)
- Gates Cambridge reference
Who should write the Gates Cambridge Reference?
As the Gates scholarships is highly competitive, you should ask someone of appropriate standing and authority to write you a reference letter. You should not ask your friends or family members to write the reference letter.
Applicants can ask their current or former employer, or a current or former academic advisor to write them a reference letter as they are aware of their attributes and qualities.
The process
There are three stages to the Gates Cambridge selection process:
- Departmental ranking
Candidates academic record matters a lot and the most outstanding candidates are considered for the scholarship.
- Shortlisting
After the candidates have been shortlisted on the basis of their academic records, their applications are then forwarded to the shortlisting committees. The shortlisting committees then look at the whole application of the candidates and then further shortlist candidates for the interview.
- Interview
The shortlisted candidates will be notified about the interview, they will be invited for a 20-25 min interview. In the interview candidates will be assessed as to why they meet the criteria for the scholarship. Depending on where the candidates are they will either take interview in person or via skype.

- Family allowance is also given to candidates with kids (£10,120 for a first child and £4,320 for a second child). Although no funding is provided for a partner.
- Fieldwork – candidates may apply to keep up to your normal maintenance allowance while on fieldwork as part of your PhD (the program does not fund other fieldwork costs)
- The program also provides Maternity/Paternity funding
- Hardship funding (for unforeseen difficulties)
Eligibilities
You are eligible for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship program if you are:
- An international citizen outside the UK
- applying to pursue one of the following full-time programs at the University of Cambridge:
- PhD
- MSc/MLitt
- One-year postgraduate course
Academic excellence
The Gates Cambridge scholarship is competitive and candidate must show excellent academic excellence. Through the transcripts, references, experience and their hunger for growth the University of Cambridge selects candidates who would be studying at the university.
Reasons for choice of course
Students need to make a valid and a strong chase as to why they chose to pursue a particular post-graduate degree. PhD and MPhil student need to contact a supervisor at the university with who they would work. Students will require a summary of the research project, which will be a part the application. Students also need to show that they have the required academic background and the needed skills and expertise to complete the course. They also need to make a strong case for how a certain course will help them for their future career.

One of the many characteristics of the Gates Cambridge program is the commitment of students to improving the lives of others. The students will be studied deeply so that they know how a candidate will help the global society in the future.
A capacity for leadership
Students applying for the scholarship must show excellent leadership qualities. The students need to show evidence of their leadership qualities till date and how their leadership qualities may impact their future.
Courses which are NOT eligible for Gates Cambridge Scholarships:
- Any Undergraduate program degree
- Master of Business (MBA)
- Master of Finance (MFin)
- PGCE
- MBBChir Clinical Studies
- MD Doctor of Medicine degree (6 years, part-time)
- Graduate Course in Medicine (A101)
- Part-time degrees
- Non-degree courses

APPLICATION PROCESS
A combined application form
Candidates need to submit their application for admission and funding (Gates Cambridge) via the University’s Graduate Application Portal.
To be considered for the scholarship, students must apply for admission to a course and a College place and the Gates Cambridge part of the funding section.
The admission section
In this section students need to apply to a specific graduate course and a College place. Applicants are required to provide all the usual details about themselves, academic background and plans for the selected course.
The funding section
In this section students can apply for a range of funding or scholarships offered including the Gates Cambridge Scholarships. It has its own sub-section. When applying for the Gates Scholarship students need to provide the following will be asked to provide the following:
- Statement
- Research proposal (PhD applicants only)
- Gates Cambridge reference
Who should write the Gates Cambridge Reference?
As the Gates scholarships is highly competitive, you should ask someone of appropriate standing and authority to write you a reference letter. You should not ask your friends or family members to write the reference letter.
Applicants can ask their current or former employer, or a current or former academic advisor to write them a reference letter as they are aware of their attributes and qualities.
The process
There are three stages to the Gates Cambridge selection process:
- Departmental ranking
Candidates academic record matters a lot and the most outstanding candidates are considered for the scholarship.
- Shortlisting
After the candidates have been shortlisted on the basis of their academic records, their applications are then forwarded to the shortlisting committees. The shortlisting committees then look at the whole application of the candidates and then further shortlist candidates for the interview.
- Interview
The shortlisted candidates will be notified about the interview, they will be invited for a 20-25 min interview. In the interview candidates will be assessed as to why they meet the criteria for the scholarship. Depending on where the candidates are they will either take interview in person or via skype.

- US citizens resident in the USA
US students applying need to submit their application and the relevant document (including references) by 14 Oct, they are eligible for any later round of the scholarship if they were to miss this deadline.
