Description

Description

Education beyond intermediate is one of the ways to eradicate poverty. Nevertheless, access to higher education is itself disseminated very irregularly. For instance, only 0.4% of the children from the lowest income quintile (from the related age cohort) are registered in higher education institutions, which is far lower than the national average of 10%. The goal of Ehsaas scholarships is to eradicate such a cause of unequal access.

As per the report of the National Human Development Report 2017, Pakistan is one of the youngest nations in the world. Understanding its demographic genuineness which has a population of around 220 million out of which more than half are of the university-age cohort, the priority of the Pakistani government is to work on such programs which give the ambition to provide access to economically worthy and also encourages gender equity. The policy is to create opportunities for a substantial youth segment to bring them under the higher education net and create equivalent educational opportunities for everyone.

Objective

  • It is a paradigm shift in the policy of the Pakistani government to support students of undergraduate level who after finishing FA/FSc. /Intermediate is not able to pursue university education due to inadequate economic resources. Unlike previous economic support schemes that were intended for MS or Ph.D. programs, the Ehsaas Undergraduate Scholarship Project focuses on the most perilous section, specifically the 4-5year undergraduate programs, which contributes the most to the income of an individual who completes the undergraduate degree
  • It is one of the considerable scheme funding under the Pakistani government’s Ehsaas social safety net program which has a purpose to provide 50,000 undergraduate scholarships with a regular budget of Rs.6 billion on annual basis. Over a period of the next four to five years, these scholarships would increase to around 200,000.
  • University tuition fee is covered by the scholarship along with the stipend throughout four-five years of the degree period. It is an important step to ensure inexpensive higher education in all main fields of education including business education, agriculture, arts and humanities, engineering, social sciences, medical, and physical sciences.
  • The purpose of the project is to support female education therefore 50% of scholarships are reserved for the female scholars in the total target of the project.
  • 2% of the scholarships are reserved for physically disabled students,
  • It is a vibrant initiative that would simplify the creation of capable staff, therefore, enhancing employability aspects in youth.
  • It anticipates creating an educational drive among those students who have finished studies due to inadequate economic problems.
  • By pointing towards the most vulnerable section of the young population through this venture, poorer families would be empowered to come out of poverty, which in the long run is anticipated to have a positive effect on persons, their families, and the entire society.
