Description

Founded in 1871, Geneseo is a premier public liberal arts college. Nationally recognized for excellence and value in the liberal arts, Geneseo is known for its exceptional faculty, its welcoming atmosphere, and its reputation for producing successful alumni

Located on 220 acres in the historic Village of Geneseo, and a short drive from Rochester and Buffalo, Geneseo offers a warm environment for learning and discovery. The campus embodies the classic aesthetic of Northeastern colleges with brick walkways, shade trees, and ivy-draped buildings.

The university dedicated to developing socially responsible citizens with skills and values for a productive life. In upholding this mission, we look for highly motivated, curious, and talented students who have demonstrated success in their academic and social lives. The admissions committee reviews applicants’ academic records and examination results, recommendations, English proficiency, and other materials to determine your probability of success at SUNY Geneseo.

Eligibilities

First-Year Students Selection Criteria

Admission decisions are based primarily on your high school academic record and the results of college entrance examinations. Submitting the SAT and/or ACT is optional. If you choose to submit, please submit through the testing agency. Self-reported test scores listed on your Common Application or printed on your high transcript are also acceptable. Geneseo will accept both the new SAT and the old SAT. We will compare your scores using concordance tables to determine your highest scores on either the new SAT or the old SAT. Strong academic programs (especially those that include honors-level courses and AP or IB courses) are preferred.

We take a holistic approach to the review process. Therefore, we look very closely at your supplemental information as well, so be sure to submit your essay, co-curricular resume and letter(s) of recommendation. This combination of information — academic as well as information about who you are outside the classroom — enables us to most accurately determine who to make offers to out of a very competitive applicant pool.

    • Transfer Applicants

For current college/university students transferring into SUNY Geneseo, we require official university transcripts up to your most recent completed semester.

Transcripts from foreign universities must be translated into English. In most cases, we will require course descriptions or syllabi in English in order to review your courses for transfer credit to SUNY Geneseo.

If you have completed fewer than 2 semesters of full-time university study, please also submit your official secondary school (high school) transcripts.

Proof of English Proficiency

The International Admission Committee requires that all students must provide proof of their English language abilities.

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 situation, we are aware that many exams are currently postponed or canceled.  In order to provide prospective students with another way to prove English Proficiency, SUNY Geneseo will now accept the Duolingo English Test.

Official results from the following English proficiency exams are accepted:

    • TOEFL (internet-based minimum score: 75)
    • Institution Code: 2540
    • IELTS (minimum score of 6.5 overall. No section can be below 6.0)
    • PTE (minimum 58)
    • iTEP (minimum 3.7)
    • MET
    • Eiken Grade Pre-1
    • Duolingo English Test (minimum 105)
    • If you are transferring from a college or university within the United States, successful completion of at least 2 full semesters of academic coursework (24 credit hours) with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 may be a sufficient demonstration of English proficiency.

Students applying from high schools in the United States, or from English-medium high schools outside the United States, may have waivers of this testing requirement considered on a case-by-case basis.
