In partnership with the British Council and the GREAT Britain Campaign, the University of Derby is offering 10 scholarships to international students applying for postgraduate courses starting in September 2021. The GREAT Scholarships 2021 programme, launched by the British Council together with 41 UK universities, supports postgraduate students to access world-class UK higher education opportunities.
Eligibilities
- Be a resident of a GREAT target country
- Have an undergraduate degree that will allow you to gain admission onto a postgraduate programme at a UK university
- Driven and intellectually able to follow and benefit from a UK postgraduate taught course
- Active in the field with work experience or with a proven interest in the proposed subject area
- Meet the English language requirement of the University of Derby
- Keen to represent the University of Derby experience, by attending lectures and tutorials and appealing with extra-curricular activities, and act as an ambassador for University of Derby, by promoting the value of studying at a UK HEI
- Eager to establish an engagement with the UK as a scholar, through personal and academic fulfilment
- Represent the high standards of the GREAT brand by becoming an advocate for scholarships
- Willing to attend a networking event of all UK-based GREAT scholars, to discuss experiences and capture perceptions of studying in the UK
On return:
- Prepared to determine future contribution to capacity-building and socio-economic progress through the benefits achieved after graduating from UK higher education
- Eager to keep interaction with the British Council and act as a representative for the GREAT Scholarships, by sharing experiences of studying in the UK with future GREAT scholars
- As a graduate of the GREAT Scholarships, willing sporadically to speak to potential applicants about his or her own experience of studying in the UK
Benefits
The scholarship programme offers financial support of £11,000 to students pursuing one year postgraduate study at the University of Derby and must be from China, Ghana, Kenya, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan or Thailand.
The university is also offering two scholarships worth £11,000 for a postgraduate student from Nigeria or Pakistan studying one of the following courses: MSc Conservation Biology, MSc Environmental Assessment and Control, MSc GeoEnergy or MSc Sustainable Architecture and Healthy Buildings.

Application Process
Applications for the British Council GREAT scholarship should be made after the applicant receives an offer. As part of the application, the applicant must include an essay of no more than 500 words about a topic that has been studied by applicant in past and why he finds it interesting. This topic must be correlated to or have inspired the applicant to apply for the chosen degree programme. This essay will be the part of selection criteria, alongside previous academic achievement, and the potential of the applicant.
- Qualified applicants may be asked to attend a video interview with the selection committee.
- The deadline for applications for this scholarship is 23:59 BST on 1 July 2021
- If you are awarded a GREAT scholarship, you are not eligible to receive any other scholarships or discounts from the University of Derby
