Description
The Tertiary Access Payment helps students from outer regional or remote areas with the costs of moving to JCU. It is a one off payment of $5,000 paid in two instalments during the first year of study.
Eligible students will be studying in the year immediately after they finish Year 12, and will be relocating to study at a JCU campus more than 90 minutes (by public transport) away from the family home.
Eligible students can use the Tertiary Access Payment to cover costs associated with study including, but not restricted to, bond for accommodation, assistance with rent and other household bills, groceries, as well as textbooks and other study supplies.
This scholarship is subject to the provisions of James Cook University’s Coursework Scholarships, Bursaries and Grants Policy.
Eligibilities
If all the below statements describe you and your current situation, you can apply for this scholarship:
- I am moving from an outer regional, remote or very remote area to study at JCU (use the Student Regional Area Search tool to check eligibility).
- My family home is more than 90 minutes away from JCU by public transport, or, no public transport is available between my family home and the JCU campus where I will be studying.
- I am starting at JCU in 2021 directly after finishing Year 12 (or equivalent) in 2020 with no gap year or deferral.
- I will be studying full-time and at least part of my course requires me to be on-campus.
- I will be younger than 22 on the day I start my course at JCU.
- I can provide evidence my parents or guardians have a combined income of $250,000 or less.
- I am an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or Permanent Humanitarian Visa Holder.
Benefits
If successful you would receive a total of $5,000 paid into your nominated bank account.
The payments will be made in two instalments over the year. The first instalment of $3,000 is paid within two weeks of your first study period’s census date*, and the second instalment of $2,000 is paid within two weeks of your second study period’s census date

Prior to submitting an application, you should carefully read the Scholarship Rules below. When applying you need to complete an application form and attach the following documents:
- Evidence of your Australian citizenship, permanent residency (if Newly Arrived Resident’s Waiting Period has been served), holding a permanent humanitarian visa or being a New Zealand citizen meeting Australian Residence rules under section 7 of the Social Security Act 1991.
- Proof of residence in an outer regional, remote or very remote area in Australia.
- Indicative evidence of where you will relocate to (at the time of applying), followed by confirmation of your new address once you have relocated.
- Evidence of your parent/s’ or guardian/s’ income.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
After submitting you will receive an email confirming your application has been received. Your application will then be checked for completeness and eligibility. The Tertiary Access Payment is a merit based award, so your application will be individually assessed and put forward to a selection committee for a final decision.
