Description
James Cook University’s Strategic Intent is to create a brighter future for life in the tropics through discoveries and graduates that make a difference.The Deans’ Scholarship seeks to support eligible students committed to making a difference in their chosen profession in tropical or undeserved communities.
The Deans’ Scholarship provides financial support to high achieving students for the length of their degree in order to allow students to fully commit to their studies. The value of the scholarship shall be $10,000 per year, for the minimum number of years expected to complete on a full time basis as specified in the relevant course handbook. Six new scholarships shall be offered each year.
This scholarship is subject to the provisions of James Cook University’s Coursework Scholarships, Bursaries and Grants Policy.
Eligibilities
The JCU Deans’ Scholarships shall be open to competition among applicants who meet the following criteria:
- Be an Australian Citizen or Australian Permanent Humanitarian Visa Holder, or Australian Permanent Resident or New Zealand Citizen;
- Be likely to achieve an Australian Tertiary Admissions Ranking (ATAR) of 97.00 or above or the equivalent International Baccalaureate (IB) score (bonus rank points will not apply); and
- Have applied through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) and nominated a JCU course as their first or second preference.
- Enrolling in Study Period 1 in the year immediately following the completion of Year 12 on a full time basis (normally 12 credit points per teaching period) in an undergraduate course within the Division of Tropical Environments & Societies at the Cairns or Townsville campus.
Ongoing eligibility
The recipient must maintain a GPA of 6.0 or the equivalent academic standing as determined by the Dean of the relevant college in each Teaching Period of the Scholarship and be enrolled full time (normally 12 credit points per teaching period). Where the recipient fails to meet this requirement, the scholarship may be terminated.
Benefits
Recipients of this scholarship will be paid $10,000 per year, paid in two equal instalments of $5,000 after the census dates in Study Period 1 and 2 each year, for the expected time to complete their course, as specified in the relevant course handbook.
Payment of the Scholarship will be contingent on meeting the following criteria;
- Achievement of an ATAR of 97.00 or above or the equivalent IB score in the year immediately prior to commencing study at JCU;
- Admission into an undergraduate course offered by JCU as a domestic student; and
- Enrolled in Study Period 1 in the year immediately following the completion of Year 12 on a full time basis (normally 12 credit points per teaching period) in an undergraduate course at the Cairns or Townsville campus.

In awarding the scholarship the Selection Committee will consider the following factors:
- The applicant’s understanding of issues facing the Tropics or underserved populations;
- The applicant’s motivation to succeed in their chosen field;
- The applicant’s communication skills;
- The applicant’s academic and other achievements and experiences;
- The stated benefit the scholarship would bring in enabling the applicant to study at JCU; and
- The applicant’s character for the award;
Application Procedures
Applications must be submitted on the official application form no later than the close date in the year in which the scholarship is to be awarded.
Applicants must submit with the official form, where appropriate:

- A typed personal statement of a maximum of 1000 words that addresses:
- What they believe to be the most significant challenges facing tropical and underserved populations and how the completion of a JCU degree will enable them to make a difference and create a brighter future for life in the Tropics;
- The reasons and motivation for their choice of study area or program; and
- The extent to which the Scholarship will make their study possible.
- A concise CV detailing academic achievements, work experience, community involvement and any other extracurricular activities (this should be no more than 5 pages);
- Year 12 Semester 1 report card; and
- No more than three written references attesting to their character and/or suitability to receive the scholarship (these can be the same as used to support written applications for courses listed above).
- A typed personal statement of a maximum of 1000 words that addresses:
Applicants may be required to undertake an interview as part of their application.
Selection Process
The award of the scholarship shall be made in the absolute discretion of the Selection Committee.
The Selection Committee shall comprise:
- Deputy Vice Chancellor, DTES (Chair), or nominee;;
- Deans of Colleges within the Division; and
- Other members at the discretion of the Deputy Vice Chancellor.
Three members shall form a quorum and must include the Dean of the relevant Colleges.
The Selection Committee reserves the right not to award a Scholarship in any year if, in the opinion of the Selection Committee, there is no applicant of sufficient merit to warrant an award.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Conditions of the Scholarship
- If the recipient defers their study, the recipient will no longer be eligible for the Scholarship. Where a Scholarship is terminated pursuant to the provisions of this clause it may be awarded to another suitable applicant.
- If the recipient takes a leave of absence without approval, the scholarship shall be terminated.
- If the recipient transfers to another course of study, continuation of the scholarship, including tenure, will be subject to the approval of the relevant Dean.
- If the recipient fails to comply with any of the conditions of this Scholarship, the Dean of the relevant College may suspend or terminate the Scholarship, or take such action as they deem necessary to enforce compliance of the condition by the recipient.
- A student may lodge a request for review of decision in accordance with the provisions of the Student Appeals Policy.
Administration of the Scholarship
- The Scholarship shall be owned by the Division of Tropical Environments and Societies. The Deans of the Colleges within each Division are key decision makers in the selection process and the ongoing monitoring to ensure the conditions of the scholarship are being met.
- The scholarship shall be administered by the Scholarships Office, on behalf of the Selection Committees and College Deans.
- The funds of the scholarship shall be held in an account in the name of the University and shall be administered by the Officer of the University charged with administering the scholarship.
- Income from a fund not expended on the award which it maintains, shall be added to and become part of the fund.
- Where an award provides some benefit to the recipient from a body external to the University, or an obligation upon a body external to the University, the University, its servants and agents, shall not be liable for that benefit or obligation
