The University of Edinburgh has introduced a Scholars Program that aims to give scholarships to postgraduate students from Africa with great leadership and academic potential but limited educational opportunities.
Almost 21 scholarships are available for the 2021/22 academic year, which would not only cover the full tuition fees but also expenses for accommodation and maintenance.
As a member of the wider Scholars Program at the University of Edinburgh, Scholars would be encouraged to participate in activities such as work-based placements, mentorship, or other activities during their academic year, alongside financial backing by the administration
Scholarships are available for the following postgraduate programs:
- MSc Africa and International Development
- MSc Environment and Development
- MSc Global Health Policy
- MA Design for Change
- MSc Sustainable Energy Systems
- MSc Entrepreneurship and Innovation
- MSc Finance, Technology, and Policy
- MSc Food Security
- MSc Design Informatics
Eligibilities
Applicants must have graduated by September 2020
- Applicants must be residents of any Sub-Saharan African country.
- Applicants currently living outside of this region for education or who have been banished and sought refuge are still qualified to apply.
- Applicants must demonstrate a leadership track record and service within their society
- Applicants must be able to present financial conditions that show that they lack financial resources to pursue higher education in their home country or elsewhere
- Applicants must be prepared to study in one of the appropriate degree programs at the University of Edinburgh
- Applicants need to have an academic qualification, in order to get admission to the degree program of their own choice
- Applicants must not have completed a postgraduate degree formerly and not be registered at a separate university while on scholarship
Benefits
The Scholarship provides complete backing for applicants to study and reside in Edinburgh. This includes housing and living costs along with tuition and travel fees.
Apart from getting outstanding tuition at one of the best educational institutions in the world, postgraduate scholars will:
- Have complete mentoring, support, and reflective opportunities through the Scholars Program
- Access to placement opportunities, which are work-based or a small work-based placement fund
- Involvement in two Scholars Retreats

- October 30 Applications Close at 2.00 pm UK time
- November 2020 – February 2021 Review of applications
2021
- The interview period of the Scholars Program would take place in March
- February 28 would be the deadline for references to be submitted, and the references would be requested only for candidates selected for the interview
- Scholars Program interview results announced on April 15
- Support would be given through admission and immigration processes by May-August
- Scholars would be arriving in Edinburgh by September
English language test
The applicants, who received the offer unless they already have a valid English language test would be tested by University’s English Language Education (ELE) center
All the tests would be conducted through video or weblink and would be free of cost. The ELE English test evaluates candidates on speaking, reading, writing, and hearing.
The university aims to have a number of appointments available to the candidates.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
It would be probable that the applicant would need an English language qualification before getting an admission offer for any other scholarships at the University of Edinburgh, or for other Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programs at other Universities.
