Application Process

Application Process

Application for graduate research scholarships is done at the time of applying for your course, unless you are already enrolled.  Whether you are a new or current student, the same application process is used for both admission and/or scholarship via our Applicant Portal.  You do not need to specify which scholarship you are applying as you are automatically considered for all graduate research scholarships (where eligible).

INTERNATIONAL (Round 1)
opens 1 September, closes 31 March

DOMESTIC (Round 2)
opens 1 November, closes 31 May

INTERNATIONAL (Round 3)
opens 1 April, closes 31 August

DOMESTIC (Round 4)
opens 1 June, closes 31 October

Step 1: Check your eligibility

  • English language proficiency: You’ll need sound English language skills for graduate research. Check that you have the relevant English language proficiency.
  • Academic qualifications: Each level of graduate research requires different academic qualifications. The minimum qualifications for admission to PhD enrolment are:

    • a bachelor’s degree requiring at least four years of full-time study in a relevant field, and which normally includes a research component in the fourth year, leading to an  honours 1 or 2A in a relevant field;
    • a course leading to a level rated by the relevant department, faculty and committee as equivalent to an honours 1 or 2A in a relevant field;
    • a master’s degree that entails work, normally including a significant research component, including at least 25% of one full time equivalent  year of work, including a thesis. It is normally expected that a grade of honours 2A has been obtained for the research thesis or project. Where ungraded, examiners’ reports will be taken into account; or
    • have qualifications which in the opinion of GRC are deemed equivalent.

  • Scholarships eligibility: In addition to the minimum entry requirement, your eligibility for a scholarship depends on your circumstances. We award a range of scholarships through a competitive selection process based on your academic record, research output, and research experience.
  • Pathways to graduate research: There’s more than one way to start a graduate research degree at Monash. If you don’t meet the eligibility requirements, you can consider other options through your preferred faculty.

Step 2: Receive an invitation to apply

  • You need to receive an invitation to apply, before you apply. To receive one, you’ll need to complete an expression of interest and/or find a supervisor who agrees to supervise your research. This depends on the faculty/institute.
  • It may take up to four weeks to receive an invitation, so make sure you start this as soon as you can.

Step 3: Prepare your documentation

When completing your application, you’ll be asked to upload copies of documents which include at least:

  • Academic curriculum vitae,
  • Official academic transcripts, degree certificate or testamur from awarding institution (including an explanation of the grading schema),
  • Proof of citizenship,
  • Proof of meeting the English language proficiency requirements,
  • Invitation to Apply, and
  • Research proposal.
  • It is your responsibility to provide all supporting documents.
  • Applications where information or documentation is incomplete may not be considered. You will be asked to submit original or correctly certified documents at enrolment.

If your documents are in a language other than English, you must provide certified translated copies. We prefer NAATI qualified translators.

Step 4: Submit your application

  • You’re ready to submit your application once you have an invitation to apply and supporting documents.
  • If you wish to be considered for a scholarship, simply indicate this on the application form. There is no need to fill out a separate application form.
  • See this application guide to learn about what you’ll need to provide in each section of the application process.

Note: You can only submit one application for consideration at a time.
