Description

Description

The DOC NOMADS Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD) in Documentary Filmmaking is a two-year, full time, international graduate program (120 ECTS) delivered by a consortium of three prominent European universities across three countries: Portugal, Hungary and Belgium.

The entire DocNomads programme was assessed by an external international panel in 2019 and found compliant with all the standards and sub-standards of the ‘European Approach for External Quality Assurance of Joint Programmes’ framework.

DocNomads is the first joint master in Europe in the field of FILM that was granted the right to use the Erasmus Mundus brand name and the grant support of the European Commission for the first five editions. This backing was granted again for the course editions in the period of 2017-2022.

In each edition, about twenty-four students from all around the world follow a mobility track from Lisbon to Brussels, via Budapest. In doing so, students are immersed within different cultural environments, learning how to make use of their abilities outside their usual social contexts.

Taught entirely in English and taking a practical approach, DOC NOMADS’ unique curriculum and supportive faculty aims at expanding students’ skills and creativity, while providing an integrated training that combines a focus on the arts with contemporary practices in film production.

Directing is essentially learnt through making films out in the real world. Students are asked to confront the aesthetic and practical challenges generated by the actual process of filmmaking and in doing so develop their critical thinking skill; gain autonomy in multifarious disciplines; and build – throughout the course – their own repertoire of formal approaches.

Upon completion of the program, degree holders will be prepared and qualified to enter a professional life in the craft of documentary filmmaking – as directors, as producers, as independent artists.

As an Erasmus Mundus Program, DOC NOMADS offers two-year scholarships to some of the selected European and non-European students.

DOC NOMADS Master Course is sponsored and supervised by the EACEA – Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency of the European Commission.

ERASMUS+ Scholarships

Erasmus Plus scholarships are awarded on the basis of excellence to eligible candidates.

The planned number of scholarships available for the 10th edition is twenty (20).

A student scholarship is awarded exclusively for a full-time enrolment in one of the Master courses and will cover the entire duration of the EMJMD study programme.

Candidates eligible for scholarships are students who have obtained a primary higher-education degree or can demonstrate a recognised equivalent according to national legislation and practices of the degree awarding country. While this condition must necessarily be fulfilled at the time of enrolment, the Consortium accepts scholarship applications from students in the last year of their first higher education degree.

DocNomads Consortium provides two categories of student scholarships based on EACEA regulations: Programme country and Partner country scholarships.

Programme countries: Member States of the European Union, and EEA-EFTA States (Iceland, Norway, Lichtenstein), UK, Turkey, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) and Serbia.

Partner countries: Countries OTHER than the countries listed in the above Programme countries category.

Special cases

    • Students with a double nationality (of a Partner and of a Programme Country) must specify the nationality under which they submit their scholarship application.
  • “12-month rule”: Candidates from Partner countries who have been residents in one of the Programme countries, or have carried out in any of these countries their main activity (studies, training or work) for more than a total of 12 months during the previous 5 years calculated backwards from the deadline of the application to DocNomads will be provided with Programme Countries category scholarships based on EACEA rules.

A minimum of 75% of EMJMD scholarships will be earmarked for candidates from Partner Countries. Erasmus+ EMJMD student scholarships can be offered to students from any region of the world. The Consortium takes geographical balance into account – i.e. no more than 3 candidates from the same country (or with the same nationality) should be awarded an EMJMD scholarship during the same intake.

PRIOR LEARNING INFORMATION

Applicants with no (Academic) BA degree can apply for recognition of ‘Previously Acquired Competence’ (PAC) or ‘Previously Acquired Qualifications (PAQ)’ to request full or partial exemptions of the desired academic Bachelor degree/bridging program.

The PAC/PAQ procedure is always handled by the higher education institution that issues the degree/program for which the candidate makes a PAC/PAQ-request. For instance, applicants that want to obtain an academic BA in Audiovisual Arts through a PAC/PAQ procedure OR wish to be granted exemption of (part of) the bridging programme in Audiovisual Arts should start their PAC/PAQ procedure at a university which provides such a course. More information on LUCA PAC-procedure: https://www.luca-arts.be/en/exemptions

Note: if an applicant succeeds in a PAC/PAQ-procedure and meets all DocNomads application requirements he/she is NOT automatically admitted as a student of DocNomads. A successful PAC/PAQ procedure only means that the applicant fulfils the formal requirements of DocNomads application.

Procedures

The application packs will be evaluated firstly by the DOC NOMADS Secretariat.

Applications meeting all formal requirements will undergo a pre-selection procedure. Applications rejected on formal grounds will not enter the pre-selection procedure.

The selection of candidates is made on the basis of the applicable set of criteria, which is carried through by a Selection Committee appointed by the Consortium.

During the pre-selection procedure the jury draws up an absolute ranking list of applicants, and then:

  • Invites the first qualified 50 applicants to an online interview to be held in February 2021;

Following this, the jury:

  • Selects the applicants qualified for Erasmus Mundus Scholarships;
  • Selects applicants offered to join the Masters course as self-funded students;
  • Designates applicants not selected for admission.

Selected applicants will be notified in writing no later than 30 April 2021.

Non-selected applicants will be notified in writing no later than 31 May 2021.

Enrolled students will sign their “Student Contract” no later than in the preparatory week of the 1st semester.

The “Student Contract” template used by the Consortium, in which the rights and obligations of the two parties are specified, is herein made available in two versions according to the situation of a self-funded student and of a scholarship student.

Its contents may be slightly revised annually, but the updated document will be announced to admitted students prior to their enrolment in the course.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Avoiding parallel funding

Students who have already obtained an EMJMD scholarship or an Erasmus Mundus Master Course / Joint Doctorate scholarship are not eligible to apply for an additional scholarship under the EMJMD action.

Erasmus+ scholarship holders cannot benefit from another EU funded scholarship scheme to follow the same EMJMD course. This holds for the entire period of the course.

EMJMD student scholarships are awarded for participation in the complete EMJMD programme. Scholarship holders cannot transfer university credits from courses taken prior to their enrolment in their EMJMD for the purpose of reducing their mandatory activities in the joint programme. Furthermore, EMJMD scholarship holders cannot at the same time be beneficiaries of a grant for student or staff mobility in the framework of other higher education programmes funded by the EU budget.

The Consortium will check the database of EACEA – as a final step before deciding on the award of Erasmus Mundus scholarships – to see if the selected students have benefitted an EMJMD scholarship or an Erasmus Mundus Master Course / Joint Doctorate scholarship OR another EU funded scholarship scheme to follow the same course OR a grant for student or staff mobility in the framework of other higher education programmes funded by the EU budget.

Students with special needs

EACEA and DocNomads Consortium have a pro-active attitude towards potential grantees with special needs.

In the event of one or more students requiring additional support resulting from special needs they are requested to provide a specific medical certificate from a national health service (or a doctor) and an estimation of the additional costs (for the duration of the DocNomads Master) issued by a national medical centre. Due to the sensitive nature of health data, this information will be processed only to the extent that it is adequate, relevant, and does not exceed the purposes for which it is collected

Description

  • Invites the first qualified 50 applicants to an online interview to be held in February 2021;

Following this, the jury:

  • Selects the applicants qualified for Erasmus Mundus Scholarships;
  • Selects applicants offered to join the Masters course as self-funded students;
