Description
UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSCR1325, 2000) is the breakthrough resolution on women, peace and security (WPS) that connects gender equality to the preservation of international peace and security. WPS agenda is an important international regulating and policy context, because it talks about the gender-specific effects of conflict, political crisis, displacement, disaster, violent fanaticism, and mass killings on women and girls. Two decades and nine resolution after, WPS plan continues to increase its footprint in global policy making.
In the framework of Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), advancement of the WPS agenda has enhanced in the recent years. In 2019, ASEAN planned the first Regional Convention on Implementation of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, which demonstrated ASEAN’s obligation to advance the WPS agenda. This was the first regional inter-sectoral discourse since the adoption of the Joint Statement on Promoting Women, Peace and Security (WPS) in ASEAN in 2017. It also marked a significant initial point to establish cross-sectoral partnership on WPS between the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) and ASEAN Political and Security Community (APSC) pillars. In addition, the Regional Symposium saw growth on progressing inter-sectoral discourse to operationalize the ASEAN Women’s Peace Registry (AWPR) under the ASEAN-Institute for Peace and Reconciliation.
