Description
This position is situated in the UNODC Global Maritime Crime Programme (GMCP) office, in Port Louis, Mauritius in the UNODC Regional Office for South Asia (ROEA). The incumbent will perform his/her tasks under the direct administration of the Programme Coordinator (Indian Ocean Region) supporting the activities Global Maritime Crime Programme.
Eligibilities
Minimum age of applicants must be 25 years old, nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty station.
Education:
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in law, criminology, or political, social sciences or relevant field is mandatory
Experience:
- 24 Months Required
- Minimum of 2 years work experience in the field of law, international law, international maritime law or with international institutions is a requirement.
- Experience in the conduct of research on maritime crime and/or law in the Indian Ocean is required.
- Experience in the supervision and operation of project activity is looked-for.
- Experience in organizing regional and international meetings is desirable.
- Experience in communications or advocacy work is desirable.
- Experience in volunteerism is an asset
- English (Mandatory) , Level – Fluent

A UN Volunteer receives a Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) which is composed of the Monthly Living Allowance (MLA) and a Family Allowance (FA) for those with dependents (maximum three).
The Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) is paid at the end of each month to cover housing, utilities, transportation, communications and other basic needs. The VLA can be computed by applying the Post-Adjustment Multiplier (PAM) to the VLA base rate of US$ 1,651. The VLA base rate is a global rate across the world, while the PAM is duty station/country-specific and fluctuates on a monthly basis according to the cost of living.
This method ensures that international UN Volunteers have comparable purchasing power at all duty stations irrespective of varying costs of living. Description of task
Under the direct regulation of the Programme Coordinator (Indian Ocean Region), the UN Volunteer would support in the implementation of activities that are carried out under the “Maritime Crime Programme – Regional Coordination” in matters correlated to maritime crime and in particular the UN Volunteer will assume the following responsibilities:
- Support the GMCP programme manager in the growth, application and evaluation of the programme activities under the Global Maritime Crime Programme;
- Assist the GMCP programme manager and other team members in categorizing technical support needs for capacity building and develop workable strategies to reform and strengthen the capacity of maritime law administration and other criminal justice authorities in the region;
- Assist the lawful team with respect to all actions which will be planned, carried out and executed and in relation to several projects in the region;
- Assist the programme coordinator and other team members in project/programme and/or budget revisions, the preparation and dissemination of costed work plans, terms of references and other related project documentation on maritime crime and detention and transfer;
- Support the conduct of research and collation of information on maritime crimes and the impact on littoral states in the Indian Ocean.
- Contribute with substantive support for policy coordination and evaluation functions, including the review and analysis of emerging issues and trends, participation in evaluations or research activities and studies;
- Contribute to the preparation of various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, briefing notes, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc., relating to maritime crime issues in the region;
- Provide administrative and substantive support to the GMCP programme coordinator in view of consultative and other meetings, workshops, conferences, etc., including proposing agenda topics, identifying and proposing participants, preparing background documents and presentations, handling logistics, etc;
- Assist the GMCP programme coordinator with administrative processes related to the procurement of equipment and services including preparation of purchase orders, contracts for consultants, related payment requests, and monitoring and follow-up on such requests in line with UN financial rules and regulations;
- Support field missions to locations the region where GMCP carries out programme activities, including provision of substantive and administrative support, data collection, etc.;
- Perform any other duties as required/assigned.
