The University of Derby is a sporting hub for capable instructors and players. The university has a track record of improving the performance of its sports club and has created an infrastructure to provide support to its talented athletes.
With a significant investment in high-class services, such as the Human Performance Unit, Sports Centre and, sport science knowledge alongside performance level coaches, the university aims to attract more and more talented players.
The Sports Scholarship programme aims to assist the talented athletes realize their sporting potential and support them through their academic studies. The athletes in the university could access a remarkable package of support tailored towards their needs, delivered by their qualified and experienced team. Two of the Universities most recent successful sports scholars are Charlie Tanfield (World Champion and Commonwealth Cycling gold medallist) and Jack Burnell (European Open Water silver medallist 2016 and Olympian 2016).
Team Derby has seven performance teams, men’s and women’s badminton, men’s basketball, men’s football, track cycling and men’s and women’s volleyball, however, athletes competing in all BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) events are eligible to apply. Applications are now open.

Application Process
- Download and complete a Team Derby Online Application Form and return it together with the sporting reference by email to sportsscholars@derby.ac.uk. The administration cannot process the application without a secondary reference preferably on supervised paper
- The applicants must apply as soon as possible and late applications would only be considered by the panel in exceptional situations.
- All applications would be considered by the Team Derby Awards Panel and any proposals made will be at the panel’s decision
- Applications will be arranged and graded as per the merit
- The submission of an application, or previous attachment in the programme, doesn’t guarantee the offer of an award
- A sport scholarship is valid for only one academic year. Scholars must reapply on time if they wish to continue to receive support
- The administration doesn’t accept enquiries for candidates considering studying at the University of Derby in future years
