Description
University of Tokyo Summer Internship program is organized by Graduate School of Frontier Sciences since 2013, which aims to provide hands-on research internship program in the field of Science, Geology, Information Technology or Sustainability Science Studies.
Eligibilities
- Applicants must be in their undergraduate program at an overseas college or university throughout the entire duration of UTSIP program, and will not have completed their bachelor’s degree.
- Applicants that are considering to matriculate graduate level study at the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences or other graduate schools at The University of Tokyo, or elsewhere in Japan
- It is mandatory for the applicants to contribute in all activities including classes, laboratory work, or other special events organized by UTSIP.
Benefits
University of Tokyo provides scholarship worth 110,000 JPY along with accommodation to participants.
The Graduate School of Frontier Sciences (GSFS) will also provide a health insurance program to every participant, which is effective throughout the entire duration of the Internship.
Health insurance plan includes:
- Death or Physical Disability benefits: 1 million yen
- Medical benefits: 1 million yen
- Liability: 100 million yen

Fill the Online Application Form
The applicants would receive an e-mail to verify their e-mail address, and would be asked to follow the instruction in the e-mail.
Non-receipt of an e-mail from UTSIP within six (6) hours after the application is submitted, it might mean that the e-mail address provided was invalid. He should reapply online. (Auto-reply e-mail is sometimes considered as unsolicited e-mail, so be sure to check your spam folder.)
Once the email address is verified, the applicant would be sent a username, password, and the URL.

Answer the following two questions within 500 to 800 words in total:

- Why did you select the particular laboratory, and what are your expectations from the UTSIP experience? Be specific.
- Describe your credentials to conduct the research project in your chosen laboratory. Explain how your experience and skills would enable you to carry out the project successfully.

Prepare a separate cover letter for every laboratory you are planning to apply. You can apply up to 3 laboratories only. Prepare a separate file for every laboratory that you choose, and name each file with the name of the lab or professor.
- Curriculum vitae

- Please share your previous experiences in detail. If you have participated in a research project related to the project you would like to conduct in UTSIP, please include this.
- Transcript Copy
The transcript must be written in English or Japanese, and must cover all the courses of undergraduate level study up to the most recent completed academic period of study.
- Recommendation letter

- Your recommendation letter should be written by someone who can evaluate your current academic abilities well. For example, a professor at your current university, or a supervisor at your previous internship.

- Certificate of Registration
The registration certificate legalizes the status of applicants as a registered student at his university. There is no precise format for this. Verification will be taken of applicant’s name, university’s name and faculty, year and month of enrollment.
- Certificate of English proficiency
TOEFL (iBT, PBT), IELTS, or TOEIC score sheet. The most recent score report should be submitted.
Following applicants are exempted from submitting a TOEFL or IELTS score report:

- Applicants having citizenship of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, or the United States.
- Applicants who study in Universities of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, or the United States.
- Applicants who study at those universities, where the official language is English.
In case (3), applicants should upload an official document issued by the university attesting that English is the medium of instruction at the university.
Passport Copy
Page with your picture (if you have one). If you do not have a passport, submit an alternative ID with your name, photo and date of birth.
Digital Data picture
Upper body, plain single-color background, taken within the last three months.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Results
Successful applicants are selected through a complete evaluation of all the application materials submitted. The applicants would receive e-mail notification of the evaluation result along with the result of the participation fee waiver sometime between March 1 and March 4, 2021.
Successful applicants must confirm their definite participation by replying within 7 days of result notification sent. In case of no reply for whatever reason, the administration will interpret the lack of response as a relinquishment of the UTSIP scholarship and participation in the program and will proceed to contact the next applicants.
Successful applicants of the cancelled UTSIP 2020 who are still qualified and meet all the principles to apply for UTSIP 2021 would be given importance. Priority selection will be made after confirmation with the laboratories.
Possibility of cancellation
UTSIP 2021 may be cancelled if the global COVID-19 pandemic should worsen.
The criteria for cancellation are as follows.
- The University of Tokyo’s activity restrictions index level for preventing the spread of the corona virus is at level 1 or higher as of March 1, 2021.
- The activity restriction index level is raised to level 1 or higher after March 1, 2021
- Once the decision to cancel the program has been made, there will not be a reconsideration. It will not be conducted online.
Schedule:
- Feb 1, 17:00: Application Submission Deadline
- Mar 1 to 4: Receive notification of selection result
- Mar 11: Deadline for submitting confirmation of participation
- Late Mar: Receive official UTSIP acceptance letter
- April 1: Check Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan’s update on border enforcement measures for countries on entry restrictions and activity restrictions after entry. Start preparations to go to Japan (get air tickets etc.)
- Late April: Apply for short stay visa (If necessary)
- Mid May: Submit health certificate
- June 6: Arrive in Japan and check into the designated accommodation
- June 7: Start of UTSIP Kashiwa 2021
