Description
IIASA offers PhD student fellowships to undertake a summer project on a topic related to the IIASA research agenda.
The institute produces world-class science through its research programs, cross-cutting activities, and international networks.
There are currently nine IIASA research programs carrying out research into the dynamics of global change. These programs use holistic approaches and effective, interdisciplinary collaborations to identify the multiple solutions needed to bring about a global transformation to true sustainability.
From June through August accepted participants work within the Institute’s research programs under the guidance of IIASA scientific staff. Funding is provided through IIASA National Member Organizations.
Eligibilities
The program is designed for PhD students (ideally about 2 years prior to receiving their PhD) working on a topic compatible with ongoing research at IIASA and a wish to explore the policy implications of their work. Participants will be working under the direct supervision of an experienced IIASA scientist in a unique interdisciplinary and international research environment. They will produce a paper (serving as first step towards a publishable journal article) and will get the opportunity to build up contacts for future collaboration within the institute’s worldwide network.
Applicants can choose to work with up to two programs. If there is additional is interest in one of our flagship projects this can be indicated in the box provided in the application form (under “please justify your choice of programs here”). We strongly encourage contacting the various program representatives and carefully read through all program descriptions before making your decision.
Applicants from all countries are welcome, although IIASA gives priority to citizens or residents of National Member Organizations (NMO) countries.
Participation in the YSSP is only possible for one summer (however, you may apply several times) and you will need to be present at the institute (i.e. no field work or working remotely) for the full duration of the program.
Benefits
The awards are given annually for outstanding work by participants in the institute’s Young Scientists Summer Program. They provide financial support for the winners to return to IIASA for an additional three months of research.

The application process is simple and convenient. It is not necessary to complete the entire application at once; you can always add information and make changes, then leave the site and come back later.
Before sending your application you are strongly advised to get in touch with the relevant program representatives to find out about mutual interest in your intended research.
The following steps will guide you through the process:
- Step 1: Create a new applicationThis option allows you to start a new application. Until the application deadline you can create a new application, edit an existing application, and submit the completed application to the program.
- Step 2: Fill in your applicationThe application requires filling in a number of boxes that ask you to provide data about your research interests, CV, motivation for applying to the program, and names of two references.
- Step 3: Submit your applicationWhen you submit your application you will receive a confirmation email and further instructions. Once the application is submitted, it cannot be changed.
Reference letters
Applications cannot be considered unless your reference letters have been received. We will send requests for recommendation to the referees as proposed in your application, but it is definitely worthwhile to follow up with your referees in person.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The 2020 YSSP, for the first time held in a virtual style, was a success. While hoping that 2021 will bring the awaited relaxing of regulations, we will remain prepared for any necessary adaptations to the program as we are closely monitoring the development in governmental decisions with regards to COVID-19.
Applications to the 2021 YSSP are therefore encouraged and will be accepted via the YSSP online application form from 1 October 2020 until 14 January 2021 (11:59 PM CEST).
Results
Selection results will be announced by 12 March 2021.

Participation costs
IIASA does not charge a tuition fee. In general, participants are expected to cover all expenses associated with their stay (3 months rent, meals, local transportation, expenses for any accompanying dependents, and health insurance) from their NMO grant or their other funding source.
How much is the stipend and who is paying?
Most of the institute’s National Member Organizations (NMOs) provide special grants to enable young scientists (either their own nationals or foreign students studying in their country) to participate in the YSSP. Note: only limited slots available so there is a chance that selected candidates will not get funding from an NMO due to high demand). The stipend varies slightly among NMOs, but usually it is €1310 per month plus airfare. If you are not citizen of or resident in an NMO country you must find alternative funds (either from your home institution or other sources) to finance participation.
